ABSTRACT

What we have to say in this chapter deals with exhibitions that are intended to communicate knowledge and understanding, and that are designed to provide a convivial and unconstrained learning experience as described in Chapter 3. Learning is closely related to knowledge and understanding, and the three terms are to some extent interchangeable in everyday conversation. To clear the air a little before describing a practical way of organising the intellectual content of an exhibition, and laying the foundations for the management of the work of the exhibition team, let us draw a few distinctions. In so doing we shall find that it helps to concentrate on verbs, or activities, rather than things and objects of thought.
