ABSTRACT
Many beginning learners do not readily perceive the individual sounds within words and may, for example, think that a word such as cat is just one sound. If the pupil is still at this stage, they must learn to spell every word as a new and unique task. In this situation there is no crossover of learning between cat and bat because the pupil does not understand the relationship between these two words.
