ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 introduced activities to promote your pupils’ phonological awareness. In Chapter 3 the emphasis is on developing your pupils’ ability to use printed letters to represent the phonological patterns in words. Although not all words in English have a regular spelling pattern, many do. Pupils who understand how to work with sounds (and the letters that represent the sounds) will be stronger spellers than pupils who rely on rote learning and a ‘whole word’ approach.
