ABSTRACT

Regular words that follow a phonic pattern should always be taught by sounding out and the use of regular phonic spelling. Phonic words are the easiest spelling patterns to learn. When a pupil learns a phonically regular word, the next time they try to spell that word, they can ‘reconstruct’ it, using a combination of memory and their skills in sounding out. For example, the pupil may remember that shout is part of the ou family and, from there, be able to build the word without having actually to recall all the letters.
