ABSTRACT

Words are the working tools of language. The more words you have in your vocabulary the easier it is to use language skilfully. With a wide and varied vocabulary you can understand more of what other people say, you can communicate easily, you can read with understanding and you can write expressively. You can also manipulate ideas and think more efficiently if you have the right words as ‘working tools’. A good vocabulary can therefore empower pupils to participate successfully in home, school and community. Conversely, an impoverished vocabulary can lead to social and academic limitations for pupils.
