ABSTRACT

sonant, i.e. the soft palate begins to be lowered during the production of the vowel, in readiness for the nasal consonant, or the nasality continues into the vowel following a nasal consonant. In such cases, it is not usually necessary to mark the vowel nasal, as all vowels in this position will be nasal and such nasality is not significant. But nasalization of vowels which is not dependent on an adjoining nasal consonant is significant in a number of Mrican languages, and this must be shown in the pronunciation and in the orthography.
