ABSTRACT

Kikuyu. The voiced pre-dental fricative ~ occurs in Kikuyu in intervocalic positions where it appears to be a weakened form of d: i~anwa, axe; mO~Enya, clay; lITe~aka, bush, jungle. (See Notes on Kikuyu, p. 215.) It is a member of the d phoneme (as 11 is of the g phoneme), and should be written with d. Sibilant Fricatives.
