understanding of the principles upon which linguistic development has taken place. In this book, however, we are mainly concerned with describing the actual pronunciation of Mrican languages as they are to-day and not with their historical development, and the student who has to learn to speak one language for the practical purposes of everyday intercourse will confuse himself if he tries to learn historical phonetics at the same time. A few examples of historical and juxta positional assimilation are given here, however, to illustrate the phonetic principles upon which such linguistic development rests.
