ABSTRACT

Perhaps the simplest fish dinner to be found in Istanbul is that offered by the fishermen themselves, perched in their boats tied up at the side of the Galata Bridge, a pontoon bridge built in 1913 that somehow defies all predictions of imminent collapse. The fishermen fry their catch in a pan of sizzling oil, sandwich pieces of fish in half a loaf of fresh warm bread, and reach up to pass this simple but nourishing meal to eager customers waiting on the pier. They provide one of the most colorful sights in the bustling district of Galata, which is possibly the liveliest area in all Istanbul.
