Towards a Community of Quality book
In looking at quality enhancement across the university system, one recurrent issue is the need for individual and collective action to bring about a 'community of quality', a networked collaborating group of stakeholders dedicated to creating the conditions necessary for high quality learning, enabling students to 'form and substantiate independent thought and action in a coherent and articulate fashion' (Barnett, 1992a, p.58). In this chapter we suggest some initiatives which may encourage this collective action. These suggestions are tentative in the sense that they require translating to suit the contexts within which they may be employed: the different histories, goals and priorities of individuals, institutions and communities must be taken into account.
