ABSTRACT

What follows is a sample of essays submitted by first-year students of History over the past year. There are three essays, on different subjects, and each one gained a different pass mark, A, B or C. Satisfy yourself that you’re familiar with the Marking Criteria section of this book (pp.49–51) and then read through all the essays, trying to decide which essay gained which mark. You might like to make a note of any passages that fulfil particular aspects of the criteria, or which seem to you especially successful or unsuccessful for any other reasons. Think, for example, about how well each essay answers the question set. After the essays, there are some exercises for you to look at.
