ABSTRACT

What follows is a sample of essays submitted by first-year students of Sociology over the past year. There are three essays, and each one gained a different pass mark, A, B, or C. Satisfy yourself that you’re familiar with the contents of the Marking Criteria section of this book (pp.49–51) and then read through all of the essays, trying to decide which essay gained which mark. You might like to make a note of any sections or passages that fulfill particular aspects of the criteria, or that appear especially successful or otherwise for any other reasons. Think, for example, about how well the essay answers the question set. After the essays, there are some exercises for you to complete.

Never omit bibliographies in your own work! You will see from these essays that Sociologists favour the Author + Date form of referencing.
