ABSTRACT

It is well worth mentioning those day trips that require special consideration, ie visiting a farm, a theme park, an adventure activity centre, etc and noting that the safety aspect should be uppermost in the teacher's mind. Irrespective of the activity involved, there is always some element of risk. However, it is important that any such risk is minimal and that pupils are not placed in situations which expose them to unacceptable levels of psychological or physical risk. If the risk cannot be minimized or at best contained, then the visit should simply not be allowed to take place. Of over 1 million school trips arranged in England each year, the number of reported injuries and fatalities are few and the number of negligence actions against party leaders very small compared with the number of trips. However, it is unwise to become too complacent.
