ABSTRACT

The spate of government legislation of the late 1980s and early 1990s greatly enhanced the powers of individual schools at the expense of LEAs in respect of resource allocation, salary and employment. These powers have not, however, been delegated to you as headteacher, but to the governing body of the school. The previous chapter sought to demonstrate how essential it is that you make the partnership with governors work because of the closeness of your linked roles. This chapter continues to develop the theme of your relationship with the governing body, explores the structures and mechanisms you will need to establish the policies, and offers some guidelines for dealing with some of the problems involved in managing resources and personnel.
