ABSTRACT

In this chapter a systematic approach to developing instructional strategies is outlined. Instructional strategies can be considered at both the micro- and macro-level. The micro-level is concerned with developing instructional strategies for an individual topic, and the macro-level with developing an overall instructional strategy for the entire learning event. At the micro-level, a five-step approach should be used: pre instructional activities, information presentation, activation of learning, follow-up and remediation. At the macro-level, there are a number of different types of learning events including: structured, unstructured, presentation, choice of explanation, adaptive, how-to, supervised, knowledge-driven, troubleshooting, simulation or laboratory, and reference guide.
