ABSTRACT

Feelings are your spontaneous reactions to your physical stress responses (e.g., the release of adrenaline) and your self-talk (i.e., thoughts, interpretations, expectations, judgments, and assumptions) that you use to label and make sense of these responses. Often you notice your feelings and little else. Therefore, it is critical to slow down your internal thought process so that you can also tune into your self-talk. Whenever a feeling arises, self-talk is also involved. One does not exist without the other. Your feelings will not control you if you allow yourself to get in touch with your self-talk process. This handout discusses some important ideas related to feelings and how they work.
