ABSTRACT

This project is suitable for children between the ages of 6 and 9 and was developed with a class of six- and seven-year-olds in a voluntary aided Church of England school with a high percentage of children identified as having learning difficulties. It was planned as complementary to a science-based topic which concentrated upon plants and growth. The teacher was looking towards the drama to provide a spiritual dimension to the work. As gardens were a major contextual reference point within the science topic – the imaginative play area, for example, was set up as a garden centre – we agreed that Oscar Wilde’s story of ‘The Selfish Giant’ would provide the foundation for the drama work.
