ABSTRACT

We all know that if we are tired or ill we do not learn as well as normal. The diet a mother eats while pregnant, particularly if she lacks certain nutrients, will profoundly affect the foetus. This can retard the normal growth of brain cells as well as other cells. Adequate intake of food and water for growth needs to be maintained throughout life, as the cells are constantly being replaced with new ones. Even the cells of the central nervous system, which have limited powers of re-growth, will undergo chemical changes all through life. The brain cells and associated nerves, functioning through electrical and chemical changes, are especially dependent on an efficient blood supply, which carries, among other things, oxygen. Lack of blood flow to the brain can cause serious brain damage within very few minutes. Proper nutrition ensures maintenance of all the body systems which are necessary for an effective and efficient flow of blood to, round and from the brain.
