ABSTRACT

This chapter moves the issue forward into the classroom and the provision that teachers should make for their musically talented pupils. The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) promote the use of technology as a ‘force for change’ in developing an arts curriculum fit for the twenty-first century. It is clear from recent QCA statements that such ‘joined-up curriculum thinking’ should be a priority as teachers not only seek to develop artistic skills but also concentrate on the more general development of pupils' creativity, thinking skills and ability to communicate and collaborate. The complexity of the curriculum offered to a musically talented pupil should reflect the capacity of that pupil to engage in advanced levels of musical ideas and activities. Effective planning is the most important part of good preparation and successful teaching. It will be crucial to ensure that all planning takes account of the identified needs of musically talented pupils.
