ABSTRACT
When considering the education of able children questions are raised about the nature of human abilities, society's values, under-achievement and related influences. This chapter sets the scene for our discussion of able children in that it presents relevant research which has been carried out in these areas both in Britain and in other parts of the world. The first section in this chapter looks at recent theories of intelligence to give context to the discussion of the results of particular research projects which follow.
