ABSTRACT

This chapter is about establishing effective behaviour support work in schools. It is divided into three parts:

First is a consideration of contracting behaviour support work with schools. This includes a description of key principles for effective negotiation and presents a model called ‘partnership planning’ which has proven to be highly successful in setting up behaviour support intervention.

A second section focuses on referral and assessment. This explores aspects of targeting systemic behaviour support by generating whole-school and professional development intervention through conventional pupil-based approaches.

The final section offers some new ways of thinking about how behaviour support specialists can effectively engage with different school culture systems.
