ABSTRACT
The opening task I offer on most INSET sessions conducted with secondary English teachers is to ask them to discuss together for a few minutes any important fiction texts they know of, written for readers aged from 11 to 16, published during the last 18 months. This activity is designed to discover which departments have kept themselves up to date with developments in children's publishing; and the results are often disappointing.
