ABSTRACT

Although there are a number of possible plans to consider here, the most effective will be those which are linked closely to assessment. Regular reviews of intervention are an important part of ongoing assessment. They provide good information about what is working, what needs to change and what could be developed further. Behaviour may improve straight away or may worsen temporarily so it is wise to maintain a consistent programme for at least six weeks before evaluating it. Involving both the child and the parents in a review meeting gives an opportunity to celebrate even small successes. It may be useful to incorporate a rating scale to discuss where the situation was at the beginning of the plan, where it is now and what might be put in place to move towards an even more positive outcome. Acknowledging all positive developments and recognising good feelings about progress is a great motivation to keep going.
