ABSTRACT

There has been extensive discussion about reasons why schools in similar areas have different degrees of success with the attainment of their pupils, and one outcome of this has been the Excellence in Cities initiative itself with its stress on achievement.

Our aim is to drive up standards in our schools in the major cities higher and faster; to match the standards of excellence found in our best schools. The output must be that city parents and city children expect and gain as much from their schools as their counterparts anywhere else in the country. A vision of what city education can become is what Excellence in Cities is all about. Excellence must be the norm.
