ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the concept of reliability and illustrates how to conduct reliability analysis in L2 research through the use of SPSS. The key aim of this chapter is to discuss and present statistical methods for evaluating the reliability of quantitative research instruments (e.g., tests and Likert-type scale questionnaires), and qualitative data coding. Researchers are expected to provide reliability estimates of their research instruments because unreliable measures imply that data analysis outcomes cannot be fully trusted.
