ABSTRACT

THE day begins with the photographers and picture desk staff arriving in theoffice and reviewing the previous day’s issue of the paper. Potential stories arebeing identified and preliminary enquiries are being made. At 10.30 the first conference of the day begins. Attended by the different heads of department and leader writers, the round-table discussion lasts for approximately 35 minutes. It begins with a summary of the day’s edition and those attending go through the paper page by page. Editorial decisions are explained and, if necessary, defended, problems are discussed and the general critique session follows.
