ABSTRACT
Zygmunt Bauman is considered one of the most infl uential living sociologists, most notably for his powerful description of contemporary society in Liquid Modernity (2000). The purpose of this chapter is twofold. I would like fi rst of all to provide a condensed description of Bauman’s notion of liquid modernity through some of his metaphors. Although Bauman is a sociologist, his work is also philosophical and historical and through continual references to historical shifts from pre-modernity, to (solid) modernity and then on to liquid modernity it is possible to see Bauman’s explanations of why modernity has become liquid. Secondly I will localize some of the ontological, epistemic and axiological commitments that emerge in Liquid Modernity.
