ABSTRACT

A longstanding question in many disciplines is why there is a need to cover theory when it is really the practice and practicalities that people want to know about. Surely whether one is a surgeon, pilot or listed company managing director, it is how to perform those jobs that counts rather than some theory that might relate to abstract elements of the task. While that view has many proponents, it is theory that allows a reflection on the ideals of tasks and effectiveness in undertaking them, enabling a considered application of established thought from a variety of disciplines over many years from researchers, writers and academics.
