ABSTRACT

This is a book about parents. It is intended for professionals who work with children or adults who were harmed as children. The parents in question are those who endanger their children or whose children may endanger themselves or others. It is important to consider the functioning and needs of these parents because our treatment systems are organized almost entirely around the needs of children and funded almost exclusively to offer services for children or for parents about children. Yet sometimes children’s needs would be met best by meeting their parents’ personal needs. Even then, however, direct service to adults around the adults’ issues is often impossible to provide.
