ABSTRACT

In Britain, we are fortunate in possessing some very early regular air temperature measurements. Several of these records were used by the late Professor Gordon Manley to reconstruct a continuous series of mean, monthly temperatures, back to January, 1659. This series is now updated monthly and is referred to as Manley’s Central England Temperature since the stations he used are representative of the English midlands. It contains 330 years of nearly precise data and is the longest climate series of its kind in the world. We can use this series to examine trends in British winter weather over the last three centuries.
