ABSTRACT
An immediate problem in studying political parties, especially in the context of American politics, is deciding what exactly is being studied. Students of government have experienced much diculty dening a political party. Particularly problematic is identifying the features of a political party that distinguish it from related concepts that also help connect citizens to government, such as interest groups.
