ABSTRACT
Harmonies constructed of thirds are called tertian. We’ll begin with the simplest tertian structure, called the triad-a chord containing three discrete pitches (excluding octave duplications) that can be stacked as a third and a fifth above one of the notes. When so stacked, the lowest note in the stack is the triad’s root.
