Moscow (Moskva) is located in the west of European Russia, on the River Moskva, which crosses the city from the north-west to the south-east. It is connected to theVolga river systemby theMoscow-VolgaCanal.Moscow is in the Central Federal Okrug and the Central Economic Area. The city’s total area is 2,510 sq km (970 sq miles). According to official estimates, at January 2012 (prior to the expansion of its territory), Moscow City had a total population of 11,612,943 and a population density of 10,644.3 per sq km. Following the expansion of the territory governed by the city in July 2012, the city has a south-western boundary with Kaluga Oblast; it is surrounded
