ABSTRACT

This statement is taken from Michael Apple’s book Ideology and Curriculum. Apple is a North American educationist whose major contribution has been to point out the close links between politics and educational knowledge. Who teaches what, to whom, and in what way is never neutral, but always reflects struggles to control the flow of knowledge. The above quote is an important statement of Apple’s argument. He reminds us that curriculum design is an intensely human activity, reflecting the values and interests of curriculum planners. However, Apple warns, there is a tendency to forget this and regard curriculum planning as a technical act-or if you like, a practical problem to be solved.
