Introduction

Bertrand Russell’s association with the United States, a country he grew to know well, was both fascinating and important and encompassed the whole of his adult life. At a time when his right to comment on American affairs was being challenged, Russell wrote in reply to an American correspondent:

‘My first lectures in your country were in 1896, and my last in 1951, so I have had a fairly long experience of the United States.’ ¹
