Bertrand Russell’s early views on America were shaped by his family’s lively interest in that country and their admiration for the spirit of liberty embodied in the Declaration of Independence. America in the nineteenth century ‘was thought to be a strange, wild, revolutionary country’; Russell wrote: ‘it was beloved by young radicals and hated by old conservatives’. 1
