ABSTRACT

The title of this chapter has been deliberately transposed: the reader might find it worthwhile to reflect on any differences between ‘Education in Religion’ and ‘Religious Education’. Perhaps the most interesting is that it places ‘education’ before ‘religion’, possibly implying that it is education which is to lead the discussion, rather than religion. To put it another way: the chapter is concerned with how human experiences of religion can somehow be adopted for the purposes of education. This is quite a departure from past practice when the subject was called ‘Religious Instruction’. The significance of the shift in emphasis might be worthy of reflection.
