ABSTRACT

This chapter works to clarify key methodological concepts for a CTS that draws from the Frankfurt School's CT. While CT is not a unified body of thought (Alway 1995: 2), we try to chart a path that stays “true” to CT roots and concepts, which clearly has not always been the case with the current formulation of CTS, as Joseph has critically noted (2011). In particular, we briefly sketch out the historical background of CT, clarify the meaning of “critical” in CT, discuss the unique methodological angle from which this mode of studying terrorism operates, describe some of the key concepts CT brings to the table, and then we indicate a potential research strategy that such an approach could pursue.
