ABSTRACT

In October the majority of the class will stay at school full-time and the children mix with a larger group each week. It is important that the class is well organised and everyone is clear about their role. Thus in this chapter we look in detail at our weekly routines, including the system of ‘focus children’, ‘spontaneous planning’, how we organise observations and how records are kept for each child. These systems are key to our success and are explained in detail. In the section describing the environment, I will look at reading and books in general, the art area indoors and the sand play area outside. The diary gives some wonderful examples of activities from this busy month, including several that were inspired by photos the children had taken at home and also trips outside the school boundaries.
