ABSTRACT

Mongolia is a parliamentary democracy with a large selectorate that forms part of the comparatively large winning coalition. Despite a number of shortcomings, such as unstable voting laws, high corruption levels, and the oligarchization of Mongolia’s politics, the electorate has considerable influence on domestic politics. Thus, the Mongolian public is particularly concerned with China’s influence over Mongolia’s economy. As a result, Mongolian politicians have used populist Sino-phobia for their own cause while, at the same time, finding it difficult to propose policies in China’s favour.
