ABSTRACT

In the previous chapter, the five aims of sentencing were noted as retribution, deterrence, incapacitation, correction, and restoration and reparation. In the first part of this chapter, these five aims will be looked at more closely in the context of reducing crime. The aspect of crime reduction of concern here lies with those crimes where the actions of an individual or group of individuals inflict harm on another person’s health or property. While equally important, the focus here is not on crime reduction initiatives aimed at financial crimes such as tax evasion or the theft of valuable pieces of art.
