At some time or other between 1240 and 1942 almost every part of Russia knew the curse of an invading army. Five major foreign attacks in 700years brought death and starvation, terror and turmoil, on a scale unique in world history. It is estimated that the war of 1914-1917 cost nearly 2,000,000 Russian lives. In the war of 1941-1945 over 7,500,000 Russian soldiers and 3,000,000 Russian civilians were killed
