ABSTRACT
Russia, with its main western border further east than at any time in its modern history, retained after 1991 the most westerly portion of the former Soviet Union: the Kaliningrad region. Formerly German East Prussia, it was annexed by the Soviet Union in 1945 (Poland annexed the southern part of East Prussia).
