ABSTRACT
Founded on 15 June 2001 , the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) was envisaged by the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, as a potential counterweight to the various Western groupings, among then NATO, the European Union (later expanded to included several former Soviet satellites) and the G7 leading economic nations, headed by the United States and Japan.
