ABSTRACT

In 605 the Slavs on the Elbe threw off Avar control. Other Slavs migrated into the Balkans. By the Avars were confined to the middle and lower Danube. The Huns of the Don formed the Khanate of Great Bulgaria, and were known henceforth as Bulgars. The Eastern Roman Empire retained a precarious control on the shores of the Crimea, in the Caucasus and round the Adriatic.
