ABSTRACT

There are many reasons for refurbishing existing buildings and many ways of reducing carbon emissions without refurbishment. In this chapter we start from the assumption that a decision has been made to reduce carbon emissions through refurbishment/retrofit and that a strategy is required to optimize the process. In Chapter 4.1 we will be looking at the energy management of existing buildings through audit and ongoing monitoring and data analysis, the output from which may include a programme of retrofitting, as well as adjustments to housekeeping, operation and maintenance. Historically energy management has been combined with water management (see Chapter 4.2) and has focused on operational energy and water consumption.
