ABSTRACT

Hume’s discussion on money is interesting since he attaches other characteristics to the monetary economy than to the barter economy, thus while looking at an barter economy as more or less only concerning individual relations, the monetary economy becomes a social process. He looks at the monetary economy as a diffusion process which due to neutrality of money with respect to commodities creates new alternatives for the consumer thus increasing the dimensionality of the commodity space both for the individual as well as the society, and thus induces an economic dynamics separate from that of the barter economy.
