In order to manage numerous foreign subsidiaries and affiliates, multinational enterprise (MNE) executives have sometimes given similar treatment to their joint ventures, wherever they were located. This has frequently resulted in serious performance problems. Why is it that all joint ventures cannot be managed the same way? As a partial explanation, this chapter argues that because environments differ, the rules of thumb which executives have derived from experiences in certain groups of countries will not be applicable in other locales.
