ABSTRACT

As I begin this final chapter, I am reminded of a question posed to me many years ago in an oral examination for my doctorate. I was enthusiastically expounding upon the relationship between personality, social factors, and career choice in music. I recall my surprise, shock, and confusion when my advisor, Jesse Gordon, interrupted and asked, “Why would anyone be interested in this information?” I had assumed the answer to that was obvious! After regaining my composure, however, I realized that my advisor was asking me to think about why my dissertation topic was important to anyone else but me, and how one could make use of the theoretical ideas I was extolling.
