ABSTRACT

The meaning of marriage ultimately comes back to the moment when two individuals publicly pledge their commitment to one another. Therefore, planning the ceremony should be of utmost importance, as the words and symbols therein represent what is internationally appreciated as a sacred union. The purpose of this chapter is to offer an overview of the ceremony and how its inherent parts are uniquely represented in weddings around the world. Further, examples of how different traditions can be blended for intercultural and interfaith ceremonies will be offered. The specific areas to be detailed include: 1) the celebrant; 2) readings and vows; 3) the incorporation of artifacts; 4) the order of ceremony; and 5) guidelines and policies.
